STRATFORD.
(from OUr Own Correspondent,) (All eommuslc»Uons, letters, etc, left with Ur H. I. Hopldns, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.) \ . Stratford, July 1. Stratford vital statistics for June are: Marriages, 8; deaths, 4; birthß, 12. A party of seholaft from the New Plymouth Boys' High School paid a visit to the Stratford Model Farm to-day. Mr. T. Webb, at one time farming on Warwick Road, is' at present on a visit to Stratford, and is much impressed with the progress of, the town and district since he left for Pftlmerston North.
During June the Stratford Borough Council issued permits for buildings of the value of £SOO.
Last night and early this morning j Stratford appeared to be the centre of a violent electrical storm. The rainfall ! was exceptionally heavy, whilst there was a good fall of hail and much lightning. Mr. J. W. Tliomas, first assistant at the Stratford District High School, was the recipient of presentations made at the school yesterday. Mr. J. W. Boon, chairman of 'the school committee, in i expressing regret at losing such a variable teacher, congratulated him on obtaining the position of headmaster at Inglewood. On behalf of the teachers and scholars he presented Mr. Thomas with a travelling rug and hag, accompanied by the best wishes regarding Mrs. Thomas and the family.. A book of Gordon's poems and a fountain pen were also presented on' behalf of the teachers. Mr. Tyrer, headmaster, after referring to Mr. Thomas's work as a teacher, also referred to his great assistance to the school football team, arid presented him with a toy whip with the red and black colors of the team. Mr. Thomas suitably acknowledged the various gifts. My report, of the Magistrate's Court proceedings in- which Percy Lewis Ward, aged 17, was charged on remand from New Plymouth with the theft of various articles was misleading, owing to the dropping of a, paragraph setting out two of the chargesi-namely, that on June 6 at Wairiri Road, near Toko, he did steal one half-draught black mare, valued *at £3O, the .property of. Clarence Bevins; also a saddle,, pair of winkers, horse cover and pair of reins valued at £3, all the property of Clarence Bevins. It was on these ;6harges that the accused was committed fo« trial, and the other charges already published were dismissed. A "house warmer" was held at Mr. Babington'e residence, Lowgalth, on the nteht of the JSoth inst., and, in spite of the bad weather, was a great success. Mr. Babington has put up a nice modern house, which does him credit.
