The match between teams representing the northern division seniors, who are playing in the Saturday competition and the dubs who are playing in central Taranaki in the Thursday competition resulted in a draw, eacli side scoring 0 points. For the Saturday team Stenort scored a try in the first spell, Vickers doing likewise for the Thursday team. In the second spell R. Coutts sc.red a try for the Thursday team, and McKcy kicked a penalty goal for the Saturday team. Mr. l>. West was referee. WELLINGTON V. TARANAKI. THE TARANAKI TEAM.
The team to represent Taranaki against Wellington on Wednesday, at Hawera, was selected on Saturday evening by Messrs. I. S. McKay and L. Beamish (southern selectors), and H. L. Abbott, R. Harkness and D. Cameron (northern selectors). The task was no easy one, owing to the late start of the competition and the fact that none of the southern selectors had seen the players In the north end In action, nor had the iiortbern selectors seen the southern men; in fact, it is questionable tf all the men in either division have come under the eyes of their own selecors. Another factor, too, is that after such a long Interval the selectors had no men with past season's reputation to call upon. It is Impossible to criticise the personnel of tho team at present. and probably there will be many changes wheal the team comes to be chosen to travel. The team, however, contains a number of young players, with a fair leavening of seasoned players, and should give a good account of itself, though it will be handicapped by lack of combination. As was expected, the southern division gains the preponderance of places, though it was confidently expected here that Wynyard (Old Boys) would have been selected. The team Is as follows: Full back, M. Malone (Kaponga); three-quarters, Hlckey (Walmate), Kupe (Clifton), Gibson (Hawera); five-eighths, S. Cameron (Alton), It. Coutts (Stratford); half, Colman (Opunaka); wing forward, M. Lynskey (Okalawa); forwards, J. Johnstone (Okalawa), W. McCook (Waimate), Blucher (Star), Manu White (Clifton), A. Spratt (Hawera), P. Norgate (Kaponga), Bourke (Waimate). Emergencies: Backs, G. Rogers (Stratford), Stewart (Clifton), S. George (Clifton); half-back, Atkins (Walmate); forwards, V. Tate (wing; Clifton), Masters (Stratford), Fuller (Clifton), Charters (Kaponga). SOUTHERN COMPETITION. HAWERA (11) v. OKAIAWA (8).
Considerable interest was evinced in the match played at Okalawa on Saturday between Okalawa and Hawera seniors, as these two Were the leaders In the division. Okalawa had an undefeated record, while Hawera had a draw with Waimate, and were, therefore, one point behind. There was a very large attendance, and the ground was in good order. The game was very keenly contested, and there was little between the teams. Hawera.backs on the day proved the better, and to this they owe their victory. Playing with the sun behind their backs, and with rhe odvictage of the do«:i grade, 01:aiawa forwards made tho pace very hot from the start, and within three minutes Luxton, by smart following up, scored a, try, which was not converted. Okaiawi had better of the first spell, but their backs did not make any use of the ball, and there was no further score in the first spell. In the second spell Hawera had the better of the [game, and Bishop evened up the score with a
neat try. Later Murphy scored, Witts convoking, and Bishop kicked a penalty goal, making the score: Hawera, 11; Okalawa, 3. Towards the close Okalawa rallied, and as the result of a kick by Radford, who followed up and smothered his opponent, B. Roberts scored, and S. Radford converted, making the final score: Hawera, 11; Okalawa, 8. J. S. McKay was refereo. JUNIOR COMPETITION. LEPrERTON (6) v. STAR (0). >-, Lepperton and Star met at the Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon, and played a fast and strenuous game, in which Lepperton had the advantage.throughout. Their forwards played in a good, solid pack, and the backs at times showed an amount of dash and combination which served the side in good stead. Star were a weaker team, and appeared occasionally to play with a little nervousness. Their backs had little opportunity of showing any form. The game was notable for some very good ticking. When time was called the score was: lepperton, 0; Star, 0. For the winners tries ware scored by R. Fussell and Copeatake. Mr. D. Johnson was referee. CLIFTON (32) N.P. HIGH SCHOOL B (0).
