EAWKE'S BAY MEETING FIRST DAY'S RESULTS. A CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association; ; - Hagtiugs, Last Night The weather was fine, but very cold for the first day of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting. There was a good attendance, and the course was in good going order. As last year*! winter meeting was run in conjunction with the Hawke's Bay Hunt ChuYi fixture, it was decided to take the figures for the 1917 meeting for totallsator comparison. On the first day of the 1917, meeting £14,800 wag passed through the machine, as against £21,595 this year. Results:

HAWKED BAY STEEPLECHASE,-* Polthgpue (E. Copestake) 1, 6 Stynr 2. Also started: 3 Bon Roto, 1 Foeman, 2 ' Qrmelby, 5 Vacuum, were was a chapter of accidents/all the horses falling. Son Reve was remounted by bia xjklar. Foeman won as he liked, bat failed to draw the weight. Polthogtoe was also remounted and awarded the wee. Styrax (re-mounted) took second. Time-7min 20sec.

THE, MARIE TEMPEST APPEAL CASE. Wellington, June 27. At the Appeal Court to-day the case ' Craw v. Jarden was heard. This is an appeal from the decision of Mr. Justice ■ Herdniaa in the actios in which appellant as plaintiif claimed reeurion of cou. tract, or as an alternative .£2OO damages. The matter concerned the sale o' a trotting filly named Marie Tempest Plaintiff alleged that the defendant '-' fraudulently represented to him that the • Ally was eligible to start in the New 1 Brighton Trotting Derby, in or nbuu-. the 1 month of May, 1919, whereas she was I not eligible to run and had not been ' entered. Plaintiff alleged that, relying - on the representation, she agreed" to ?' purchase Marie Tempest for £4OO. 5 In an oral judgment, his Honor held l" that plaintiff had not discharged the onus uporf her of establishing fraud, and entered judgment for defendant.
