Six villages on the island vied with each other in the effort to excel in dancing. One group of 50 men- and women, dressed in their old heathen costume of tapa cloth, gave a vigorous exhibition of heathen dances to the accompaniment of tomtoms. Forty returned .Aitatakian soldiers paraded and were complimented by his Excellency on their fine diseiplihe and bearing. In the afternon the party were taken in boats to witness the Natives diving to catch sharks in coral caves in the expansive lagoon formed by the reef. Unfortunately no sharks were located. in the evening there was an exhibition of by Native men, women slid children with bare feet. Subsequently his Excellency entertained the resident agent, Captain Cooper, and others at dinner on the Tutanekai.
