The scheme, no doubt, is a good one, but one of the chief difficulties in carrying it out seems to be, not to get the land, which is offered very freely, and at fairly reasonable rates, but to get a sufficiently large Government department to deal with the detail matters connected with its purchase speedily and efficiently, so that the owners of properties may not have to wait for an indefinite period before they know where they are, and the applicants for settlement get ,to' work straight away. The members of the Presbyterian Church attending divine service in tne (Jrenui Hall on Sunday last were somewhat surprised and not a little amused by the endeavor of a well-grown female specimen of the Jersey breed to become one of their number. The would-be worshipper managed to get through the open doorway before her presence was noticed, and whether the bitterly cold day induced her to dook for warmer quarters or she was seeking spiritual advice and comfort is "pest known to the animal herself; but the fact remains that her offer to become one of the congregation was quietly but firmly refused, and the producer of butter-fat was given a polite intimation that her company could be dispensed with. As predicted, the hall held by tie young ladies in the Urenui Hall on Thursday evening las.t was most successfully carried out, in spite of the very inclement state of the weather, and it is estimated that there were some sixty couples present, including visitors from all parts of the district. The ball opened with the grand march, and the many handsome dresses worn by the ladies were shown off to full advantage, the tasteful manner in which the hall was decorated tending to enhance the effect. The music was supplied by Mrs. George's orchestra from New Plymouth, and those who were not dancing were thus afforded the pleasure of listening to a musical treat. The duties of M's C. were undertaken by several of the ladies comprising the committee, and .they left nothing undone in attending to the comfort of those present. A bountiful snipper was -provided (the. catering being undertaken by Mr. C. Dunbar), and was accorded full justice by daucere and non-dancers alike Taken everything passed off really well, and the committee are to Ibe complinjgnted uoon the &usc.esafui tasaaiaftttoa a&Siale, eff<H% "" """ "
