JOHN BROWN'S TROUBLES.
ISSUING VALUELESS CHEQUES. Auckland, June 24. A sub-lieutenant in the Naval Reserve, named John Brown, 33 years of age, appeared before Mr. Wilßon, S.M., at the Police Court, charged with on June 5 obtaining from Leonard King £2 by means of a valueless cheque, and on June 0 obtaining £1 l<fe, from James William .Speight by means of another valueless cheque. Constable Cleary said that when he arrested the accused at Cambridge he was wearing naval uniform. Ho said that the staff-master at Wellington was responsible for him being in difficulties over the cheques. He was wearing the decoration of the Belgian Cross, so witness was informed.
Mr. Inder pointed out that the accused had £l7O due to him for salvage work, £7O in the Union Bank in England, and a further sum of £238 was expected from England. He had drawn these cheques for small amounts and thought the money would have been here long ago. He had no criminal intent.
The Magistrate said ihe thought there was a case for the Supreme Court. Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed, accused in £U>O and 'WJ.WJBr..'«f AUtt
