ENGINEER'S REPORT. | The engineer (Mr. J. W. Spence) reported rvs follows to Saturday's meeting of the Stratford County CouncilsNorth Elding (west)— The month lias been taken up with the crushing and refacing and rolling of the following roads: About 111 : chains of the York rood, refaced with 146 [cubic yards of metal; Cardiff road, II chains with 213 cubic yards; Monmouth, 15 chains, with 19314 cubic yards; Upper Pembroke road, 15% chains, with 200 cubic yards; and the Radnor road, 29 chains, with 418 cubic yards, About 100 cubic yards of boulders are being crushed for the Midhirst Dairy Company Ou completion of this work the crushing plant, which badly wants an overhaul, will be brought In for repairs. Tour small bridges on th« Derby road, which were in a dangerous condition, are being repaired by the settlers. Extra stringers are being put in and portions of the decking renewed. North Riding (east)— General maintenance work has been carried out on the Salisbury, Stanley, Ackland and Croydon roads. About 40 yards of shellrock have been carted on the road from Mr. Aldridge's pit. four posts and some wire were placed on the side of the Ackland road where a portion of tbo tunnel bad fallen in.

East Riding (Toko) —General ditch cleaning, metal patching, and blinding has been carried out on the Ohura road. The portion of the Raupabu road recently refaced has been blinded and rolled. A short portion of the Toko road (east) has been scarified, refaced and rolled. The crushing of shellrock for the Waiwirl road was well in hand till the recent wet weather Interfered with the work, which has been temporarily suspended. A little Over 600 yards have been placed on the road, about 100 yards are yet required to reface the road to Mr. Milne's gate. The road has suffered considerably with the metal carting. Considerable delay through shortage of labor has been experienced in connection with this work. East Riding (Douglas)— The portion of the Makuri road near the Main road has been put in order,! general patching and road works have been carried out on the Ohura road, and some of the broken metal alongside the tarred portion has been taken out by the lorry to the top of the saddle. A dressing of reatar has been placed on the Ohura road, from Douglas railway crossing for 100 chains towards Toko. The tarring of the Kahourl bridge Will be put in hand when the weather permits. East Riding (Huiroa)—General road work has been carried out iu- this riding. The two stringers and some decking on the Waitara bridge have been renewed. A small concrete wall has been placed at the upper end of the pipes crossing the Douglas North road, to prevent water from finding its way under the line of pipes. The Makuri road east and west is

now receiving attention la the way «f Watertabling and banking up. Mangaehu Hiding.—Several bad comets on the Mangotuku and Mangaehu roads have been 1 attended to. Hoads generally have receltcd Ht--1 Mention, and are now In fair order. Owing to the timber required for repairing the Tututawa | bridge not having couie to hand, this work has been delayed. 1 South Biding—During the month six 12-lnch ' pipes have been placed in the Oru road and the road at the crossing has been made good. The approach to the Cllrala stream on th# Cornwall road has been widened and wateri tables formed to divert the water which was finding Its way down the centre of the road. A drain on the Sole road In front of Mr. Marr's property has been put in. General maintenance work has been carried out on the other roads. The road roller Is at present at work on the Wingrove road, where scarifying reforiulu£ and rolling work Is in hand. A number of applications were received for tile position of motor lorry driver and also for that of bridge foreman. In both cases a selection has been made. In the case of the former the man appointed taking up hi 9 duties on the 15th, in the latter duties will be commenced on or about the 25th last. The report was adopted.
