ORTHOPOEDIC CASES.
SIR J AS. ALLEN PRAISES MEDICAL OFFICERS. Christchureh, June 22. In a speech at the opening of the new military wards at the Christchureh Hospital yesterday Sir James Allen paid a nigh tribute to the medical officers who are attending to the returned men, pointing out that they were giving up a great deal to remain with the Defence Department. "They want," said Sir James, "to be able to build up their civil practice, but unfortunately we cannot let them go. The question of pay and other emolument is under consideration at the present moment, and I hope an improvement will be made in regard to their pay. I hope also before long the Direc-tor-General of Medical Services will be able to allow some of them part time service with us and the other part of their time to re-establish themselves in civil practice." Sir James Allen remarked that with four orthopoedic centres (Christchureh, Dunedin, Trentham, and Auckland) he hoped SurgeonGeneral McGavin would be able to agree. As far as could be foreseen sufficient orthopoedic provision had been made in | New Zealand. "If that is not enough, then I here publicly state that the de- ! partment will not slacken its efforts if further provision is required."
