MEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ADJOURNED MONTHLY MEETING. The adjourned monthly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night, there being present the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. J. Clarke, F. J. Hill, W. F. Short, W. A. Collis, R. L. Parkin, and H. V. S. Griffiths. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. J. W. Hayden and A. S. Brooker. The matter of the construction of public conveniences in Brougham Street was reported on by the Finance Committee, who recommended that alternative tenders be invitel for the plans as specified or for a reduced area of tiling. In the absence of several councillors consideration of the report was deferred. The General Purposes Committee made recommendations in regard to stands for expresses, caibs, licensed motor cars, motor delivery vans, motor buses, and the municipal motor bus, etc., and these were adopted. The Tramway and Electric Light Committee submitted proposals for a new time-table for the motor-bus, including two trips per day to Frankley Road. The time-table was (suggested for a three months' trial, and the question of fares had been deferred until the timetable had been given a trial.—Adopted. The Mayor, Cr. Parkin, and the borough engineer were authorised to purchase a stone-chipping machine at an estimated cost of £SOO. GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE.

Subsequently a meeting of the General Committee was held, the same councillors being present. A letter was received from Dr. Th&cker, Mayor of Christchurcli, inviting the mayors of all boroughs and cities to a conference to be held is Christchurch in the first week in July for the purpose of discussing the following matters: (1) The iaiqujiljies. of our railway system; (2) the inefficient ferry service between Cyttelton and Wellington; (3) the'housing problem (ita finance); (i) shortage of coal (its municipal control); (5) concrete roads and arterial roadways; (6) completion of main trunk lines; (7) hydro-electric development; (8) Uniformity of motor and other I traffic by-laws.

Mr. Burgess said it would be impossible for Mm to attend the conference, but he appreciated (Dr. Thacker's invitation and would thank him for it. Fiva residents of Sackville Street, Fitzroy, petitioned the council to proceed as early aa possible with the work of opening up that street from its present northern end. Buildings are to be erected on the -sections, and at present there wag no aceogs for vehicles.

It was decided to write to the petitioners and/ask how many houses it was proposed to erect.

The secretary of the : New Plymouth Ratepayers? Association wrote expressing- the association's '< satisfaction at learning that the council had decided to .proceed with the installation of (public .conveniences in the town.—Received. The Fitzroy Ratepayers'. Association wrote complaining of the excessive speed of motorists going round the corner at Taylor's store. The same association also aeked that a tram shelter should be erected at Strandon. The first matter was referred to the inspector and the latter to the electrical engineer.

The secretary of the East End Reserve Committee wrote asking for a street light opposite Mr. Knight's stables near the reserve.—lt was decided to visit the locality before taking any action.
