The condition of Mr. James Hawkins, the well-known hotel proprietor, who has been in a private hospital for some time, is causing his friends anxiety. He was an early settler, arriving in Lyttelton in 1855. For many years Tie was a prominent pastpralist, retiring about ten years ago. He wag a keen sportsman, and one of the originators of the Grand National Steeplechase, and for several years he was chairman of the South Canterbury Jockey Club. He is survived by his widow and three daughters. The death took place at New Plymouth Hospital yesterday of Mr. F. W. Oldham, a well known settler of the district- For some years he was farming on upper Mangorei Road, afterwards taking up his residence in New Plymouth. He Was born in England some 65 years ago, and in his early manhood days led an adventurous life, including, a trip of exploration to New Guinea, where his party were Attacked by the savages, who killed all his companions, and he only saved his own life by floating down the Fly River on a piece of timber. His wife predeceased him by only a few weeks. He leaves a daughter. The Hawera, Star reports the death, on Saturday, of Mrs. T. G. L. Nicholas, Who, with her husband, was one of the earliest settlors in the Hawera district, and lived there until comparatively recently. _ For a few years she had resided at Levin, where the climate was more suited to the state of her health. Mrs. Nicholas was generally respected for her courteous, kindly manner and her helpfulness in all service within her power to the community. There was a large family—eight sons and five daughters. Sister Susie Nicholas, who has been abroad on military nursing work, was due to arrive in a transport at Port Chalmers just on the eve of her mother's
