Major Seeper, New Zealand Medical Corps, recently demobilised, expects to, start, in Eltham as a doctor early in July. i Mrs. E. R. Captain Clayden, commander of the Arawa, has been appointed to succeed the late Captain McDougall as marine superintendent in the South Island lor the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company. Mrs J. H. Clarke, of Okato, baa re* ceived advice that her husband, Rifleman J. H. Clarke, is arriving by the Tahiti, due at Auckland about July 2nd. Mr. W. White, of the firm: of Messrs. Lovell and Christmas, left Hawera for Wellington yesterday morning, en route to England. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, who has been ten weeks in hospital, haa now returned to his home (states a Press Association telegram)< Bis health, though not fully established, is greatly improved. . Mr. Ballantine, school inspector, on his way out to Matemateonga School, had the misfortune to meet with a car accident. The car skidded going round a bend and upset down a bank. Mr Ballantine fell clear before the car turned horse and continued his journey. Mr George Petone Carter, who it is claimed was the first European child born in the Wellington distrlot, died at Newtown, Wellington, on Sunday, aged 79. His parents were among the first lot of immigrants to land at Petone; Mr. J. F. Andrews. 18.0., late secretary to the Cabinet and clerk of the Executive Council, who recently retired, and whose health has been causing his friends anxiety, is convalescing <m his brother-in-law's farm at Pihama. Mr. Johnson, manager of the Kapuni branch of the Joll Daily Company, was presented with a substantial cheque on behalf of the suppliers last week, as a mark of appreciation of the good work' done by him at the time of the Epidemic. The residents of Glenn Road, Kaupoko nui, met at Mr. Gamlin's residence on Monday evening and bade farewell to Mr. and Mrs. J. Da&ers and family, who have been resident in the district fir 11 yearn. Mr. S. Millar, on behalf of the people of Kaupokonui, presented Mr. and Mrs. Dabkers and family with a hand- , some silver tea set and oak tray. and set of carverß, and to each of the little ones a small present. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Adlam, pf Oakuta, celebrated the golden anniversary ,of their wedding day on Wednesday at New | Plymouth, when there was a large family gathering at a "wedding breakfast." Mr. W. J, Penn, who presided, said Mr. ■ Odlam in his younger days had served his Queen and country in the 43rd Regiment, coming from India to New Zealand to take part in the Maori wars. He was present at the taking of the Gate Pa, and afterwards came over to Taranaki with his regiment. In 1808 he bought land ta Oakura, and in the following year married and settled down. He had done his full share of work on local bodies, and taken part in all public and social movements in his district.
