WHAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS DONE. By Telegraphs-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In a statement regarding the progress of soldier settlements, the Minister of Lands stated that 1624 soldiers had been settled on 796,503 acres of land. The claims of 354 soldiers are under consideration, involving an area of 112,286 acres. The department has still available for selection 146,864 acres, and has under consideration the purchase of further areas aggregating 146,311 acres. Nine hundred and thirty-seven soldiers have been provided with houses under the purchase scheme, and 497 claims await decision. The sum expended in the purchase of lands for settlement of soldiers is approximately £2,750,000. The total expenditure on lands, dwellings and other commitments for soldiers amounts to i £4,616,929.
