Christchurch, Last Nignt. The Minister for Internal Affairs stated to-day that he had received numerous applications for increased totalisator permits, but any extension would have to be granted by Parliament, and nothing could be done until the law was altered. Regarding the proposed special meetings for Lord Jellicoe and the Prince of Wales, Mr. Russell said that the same remarks applied- If permits were available the Government would issue them, but, alternatively, the only possibility was that one of the local dubs would sacrifice a day in favor of the special meeting.
TDKP TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") First class acceptances are carded for the Napier Park Racing Club's winter meeting, which takes place to-day and to-morrow. Proceedings open with the Moteo Hack Hurdle Race, which promisee to introduce several promising aspirants to jumping honors, and the naming of Teka, Hydros, Blaster Moutoa and other* will be watched with interest. Good reports come to hand concerning the schooling work done by Teka and Hydras, but Rio may beat the pair of them. Certainly Rio apears to be the one most likely to win a race at the meeting. Master Webster has aWg load in the Petane Hack Steeplechase, but his opponents are not- a very flash lot. Bollin and Sail Home may be ihe best of the opposition. The Stewards' Stakes looks very open, but Vagabond, Sweet Corn, Bagdad, Ohinewairua, and Gold Kip all have friends. Bagdad may be the most reliable of the mudlarks, but Gold Kip is reported to be in great heart at present. Ohinewairua is only a handful, and nervous at that, and may not be suited by to-day's big field. The Napier Steeplechase is voted a fair thing for Polthogue, but anything might happ'n in such an event, and good jumpers, like Arlington and Mavolo are sure to be in the money. The Ladies* Necklace may see Mr. J. Bull's elect in winning vein. Master Lupin has only to reproduce his recent form to give the Ahuriri Hurdle Race a big stake. Want appears to be the best handicapped of the others. To-day's racing concludes with the Settlers' Handicap, Orawia won easily enough at Gisborne, and a rise of 11 lbs may not stop him to-day.' Tieki also showed good form last week, and Ruddy has yet to reproduce his promising track gallops in public.
