THE GREEN ISLAND TROUBLE.
STRIKERS FINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. _ Dunedin, Last Night. In the Magistrate's Court to-day cases were heard arising out of the recent coal miners' strike at Green Island. The proceedings were taken by the Inspector of Awards, who is claiming a penalty against twenty defendants for a breach of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Defendants admitted the offence. In the course of his statement for the prosecution, Mr. McGregor said that yesterday the men said that unless the cases were withdrawn the men at Green Island would not work to-day, and that had taken place. The pits were idle and the bulk of the men were in court. Counsel for defence said that the president of the union said that if a statement was made threatening a further strike it was not under the union's insfuctions.
The Magistrate imposed a penalty of £2 against each defendant.
