DISTRICT NEWS.

HURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent) The urgent need of a social hall on this road was again emphasised last Friday evening, when a welcome home was tendered to Mr and Mrs T. Taylor's two sons, and Mr H. Loveridge's son Algie, who have been away In defence of King and Country. Mr A. Smith, on behalf of the people of the district, extended a haarty welcome to the guests, the soldiers briefly replying. "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was sung heartily. During the evening Mr T. Taylor was encored for one of his popular comics.

With departures and new arrivals vans of furniture are quite a frequeut sight up and dewn the road.

One of our returned boys who took up a suction on the road Intends to build shortly, which will help to advance our prosperous little district.

Mr Jellyman has sold his farm to a returned soldier, and there are three more making applications for farms along the road. One thing lacking on the road Is a post oßice and telephone service, but I believe a move is to be made shortly to obtain the'same. The directors of the Omata Dairy Company had no little task in selecting a manager, there being twenty-two applicants for the position, finally selecting Mr Lynch, of the Tarata Dairy Company. We have a nice up-to-date concrete butterfactory, but 1 am sorry to say the directors are overlooking the state of Its surroundings. The grounds are becoming covered with gorse, etc., which is detrimental to the district and a disgrace to all concerned. f would suggest a working bee to clean Jt up and make a plantation, which would tB-Miy be a beauty SDot but an advanceirem u> iu* road. The mild winter w are exoenencing is agreeing with the stock, which is an looking well. I am pleased to report that Mrs Higgins secured first prize for home-made butter at the recent show.
