He found great prosperity. The iron and steel trades are particularly busy and have orders for a year ahead. A conference of the Railwaymen's Union adopted a resolution protesting against the Government's refusal to recognise the Police Union, and urging the workers to support the police.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc HOURS AND WAGES. London, June 17. As the result of Sir R. S. Home's conference with the National Industrial Councils and committees representing the employers and workers the Government is arranging for the introduction of Bills fixing 4S and 50 hours as the maximum in industrial and commercial occupations, also minimum wages.
MENACE OF MEAT TRUST.
London, June 17. Mr. McCurdy, for the Ministry of Food, announces that owing to the expectation of a further rise in food prices nest winter, the Government is considering the resumption of nationa] or interAllied purchases of essetnial foodstuffs to stabilise prices and abolish speculative buyers. The rapid multiplication of trusts to maintain high prices is proceeding at an alarming rate. The American Meat Trust's growing power and its control of the world's meat price* is causing the Government uneasiness.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc
