! - \ OPENING DAY,'. | By; Telegraph;— Press; Association.. Palmerston North, June: 17. The seventeenth annual winter show at. Balmerstoa; North opened to-day ia fine- weather.-. The entries were larger thou; last year, but the backward season was i responsible for the falling off in [farm exhibits.and field; coots. The needlework display of soldiers' l work is ai feature of the show. At the National Dairy Association Itneeting to-day it was announced that 'Messrs Allen (Cambride) and Forsyth (Eltham) had been re-elected directors, .and that Mr. Moss (Wellington district) had also - been elected.. ' SOLDIERS' WORK EXHIBITS. Palmerston North, Last Night. The exhibit of work by convalescent soldiers at the winter show was particularly interesting. In the needlework competition against women Private Anstis (Rotorua) won two firsts- Several exhibits which are the work of onei armed soldiers are in the prize list. In wood carving, Private Neilsen (Rotorua) won first prize, Private Tinicane (Rotorua) 2, Sapper Fraser (Dunedin) 3. There were five entries. Leatherwork: Lieut. Clerk (Christchurch) 1, Private Mackie 2, Private Bilkey -(Auckland) 3. There were 39 entries.

Pokerwork: Private Capslin 1, Private Barr (Dunedin) 2, Private Williams (Wanganui) 3. There were four entriesCanework: Private Blair (Wanganui) 1 and 2, Rifleman Duff (Dunedin) 3. There were nine entries.

Fancywork: Private Ball (Christchurch) 1 and 3, Private Reynolds (Miramar) 2. There were 28 entries. Wool floor mats: Private Davis (Miramar) 1, Lance-corporal Burton (Rotorua) 2, the only entries. Raffia work: Lieut. Barron (Cambridge) 1, Lieut. Ryan (Rotorua) 2, Private Goodall 3. There were 27 entries.

Raffia trays: Private Pepperell (Wanganui) 1, 2 and 3. Cane chair: Corporal Poole (Wanganui) 1. There were three entries. Trays: Private Cook (Dunedin) 1, Rifleman Bennett (Auckland) 2, Trooper Killoh (Hamner) 3. There were 20 entries.

Woodwork: Private W. Parker (Rotorua) 1, Corporal Poole (Wanganui) 2, There were seven entries.

Photography: Private Smith (Rotorua) 1, Private Gilmour (Dunedin) 2There were 17 entries.

Netted work: Private Mills (Wanganui) 1, Private McCann (Wanganui) 2. There were seven entries.

Special woven tweed: Lance-corporal Burton (Rotorua) 1. Special, 200 wooden toys:- Privates Collinson and Nicholson (Rotorua) 1 and 2.

DAIRY PRODUCE. (Prom Our Special Reporter.) There is a splendid display of dairy produce at the National Show, the entries aggregating 327. The championship aggregate was won by CheltenhamMoa Farmers and Midhirst were the only Taranaki factories entered the butter section, and neither gained prize money. In thft cheese sections Taranaki was represented by Kakaramea, Lepperton, Tuna, and Mangatoki Companies, the Mahoe branch of the latter obtaining two second prizes. The quality of the butter, according to the judge, was as good as previous years.

The judges remarked that the cheese exhibits were very good.
