June IC. Tiie Stratford branch 3f the Tarauaki School Committees Association will hold their annual meeting at the Stratford school on June 24. The meeting will be attended by Messrs S. 'J. Smith, M.l'., (president of the Taranaki Association) aud R. Masters (chairman of the Education Board), each of whom will deliver an members of school committees as possible will be present. The site at present used by owners of laxia as a stand does not myet with the approval of a lew business people whose premises are opposite, and are frequently cut oil from the other side of the street by a long line of taxis. The portion of the street allotted as a stand is close to the footpath, and the taxis, forming a long string one behind the other, make it very ditiicult to approach certain business premises by motor car or other vehicle, while pedestrians desiring to approach from the other side of the street may have to make a considerable detour. The noise in starting cars is, it is stated by the adjacent business people, annoying both to them and their customers, to say nothing of the smell of benzine. It has been suggested by some of those directly concerned that the stand should be either opposite the post office or in the middle of Broadway. The taxi-owners object to any change, and have not been slow to place their side of the case before the Borough Council. In addition to this a petition signed by about GO (business people will be presented to the council at its meeting to-night, urging that the stand should remain as at present.

The Stratford Retailers' Association, at a meeting presided over by Mr. C. B. James, decided to support the Stratford Chamber of Commerce in the universal Saturday half-holiday proposal. The engagement .is announced of Miss Dorothy Hine, daughter of Major and ilrs. J. B. Hine, of Toko, to Mr. Philip Clemow, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs Bate Cleraow, of Stratford.

A [surprise party was held .at tlio residence of Mr. S. Bellamy, Iluiroa, last weak, when a large number of people assembled to do honor to Corporal H. Bellamy, lately returned from the front A very pleasant evening was spent witli cards, games, and songs. On behalf of the residents Corporal Bellamy was presented with an illuminated address in recognition of his services to his country. The cribbage match between Denbigh Eoad and Stratford Card Club last week was won by the Card Club by 19 games. The club meets Te Popo on Wednesday night, and will play a return match against Denbigh Road on Friday. The following team will represent Te Popo: R. Kemp, P.. Blanchard, M. Knot, C. Agent, J. Gibbs, J. Smith, J. Oldridge, 3. Slater, A. Tocker, H. Jphnson, It. Steer, Boxer, P. Leroy, and .J. Davidson. '
