TRAMWAYMEN'S TROUBLES
HOLIDAYS AND HOUSING.
A series of letters from the secretary of the Tramway Employees' Union were before the Borough Council last night. The first was in regard to alleged delay in granting the annual holidays and to some time due to certain men, overdue from 1017. The engineer explained that the holidays usually began in June, and this year they would be a little later in the month than usual. The council decided to reply that the holidays would commence in June, and that the four men to whom short periods were overdue would have the time added to their coming annual leave. The next letter dealt with the holidays for the coming peace celebrations. The men asked for time and a half pay on the three days during which peace would be celebrated, and also that three days' holiday, on full pay, in lieu of the peace days, should be added to the forthcoming annual holidays. The council decided that it would follow the same course as that to be followed by the majority of tramway undertakings in New Zealand, and that the three days' holiday would be added to the next annual holidays falling due after the celebration of peace. The last letter referred to the difficulty of procuring house accommodation, and asked that in any scheme of building undertaken by the council consideration should be given to tramway employees. A case was cited of one man who had to store his furniture and go into lodgings, on account of not being able to get a house-
The matter was referred to the committee already set up to consider the housing problem.
