THE OBNOXIOUS BY-LAW.

"FREAK PROPOSAL." At Saturday's meeting; of the sltham County Council a letter was read from the New Plymouth Borough Council asking for support in opposing the Taranaki County Council's new by-law.

The chairman said a set of by-laws had been proposed for the whole of the counties' districts by a by-laws conference, and Taranaki, which was one of the two bodies to stand out. now came down with a freak proposal like this. Such a measure could not stand against public opinion. They should offer it the strongest opposition. Cr. Messana said the by-law would come into force. The chairman: 'They might as well put a barb wire fence around New Plymouth if it does. A member said the ratepayers should call upon the Taranaki council to resign. The chairman moved that the council protest strongly against the by-law, and that representations be made to the Government. This was carried unanimously.
