NEW PRISON SITE.
AT TRENTHAM AND HERETAUNGA. For years past the Government authorities have been considering the advisability of abandoning the Terrace Gaol site as a prison and transferring its inmates to a freer locality beyond the city's bounds, where pris:on labor could be used to better advantages than is the case at present. The present Minister of Justice is wholly in favor of the change, and his intentions are shadowed in a notice that appears: in last week's Gazette.
The notice is to the effect that the. Governor-General, in pursuance of powers conferred by section 6 of the Public Reserves and Domains Act, 1908, declares the purpose of a certain reserve changed from a rifle range to a site for a prison. The land referred to is an area of 302 acres 1 rood 27 perches, parts of sections 9G, 100, 104, 10S, 105, lOd, and 200, Hutt Registration District, Block I, Rimutaka Survey District. The land is on the camp side of the railway, and fronts the railway line for about 2% chains, commencing from the corner of the school site almost opposite Heretaunga Railway Station.
The notice is issued subject to the provisions of section 7of the Act. According to this section, before the change of purpose becomes effective the notice must be gazetted during the four consecutive weeks, and be laid before Parliament within ten days of the commencement of the session. If cither House of Parliament during the session declares by resolution that it does not. assent to the change, then no further action shall be taken in the matter. If no aieh resolution is passed, then from the end of the session the notice shall be effectual.
