THE WINTER SHOW.
CHILDREN'S DAY, ANOTHER LARGE ATTENDANCE. There was again a large attendance at the Winter Show on the occasion of Children's Day yesterday, and all appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves, giving tUe cheap-jacks and side-shows a busy time. In the evening there was a crowd also, the takings for the day exceeding those for the same day last year. The Citizens' Band again rendered a fine programme of music. THE POULTRY SHOW. Mr. W. Hall, of Lepperton, won Mr. S. J. Smith's £5 5s cup for the best bird in the show with a. Silver Wyandotte that also got the cup last year. In canaries, Yorkshire, yellow, ticked, marked or variegated cock or hen the correct award was F. Goodacre 1 and 3, S. Brooks 2. In pigeons considerable interest was attached to the English owls exhibited by Messrs Gardiner aDd Sons, of Mahoe. These birds were Crystal Palace prizewinners, and one of them received a gold medal for the best bird in the show. STRATFORD MODEL FARM DISPLAY. What promises to become a feature of future shows is the display made by the Stratford Model Dairy Farm. This farm, fts farmers generally recognise, was established with the object of demonstrating what particular varieties of root and fodder crops are best suited to the district, as well as the treatment they desire. This year the farm has very interesting and instructive exhibit, which it is hoped will be made move comprehensive and instructive as the year goes on. The exhibit, which is well set out in the main hall, is worthy of every farmer's inspection. Included I are 14 varieties of soft turnips, 12 varieties of swedes, 4 varieties of mangolds, and 2 varieties of carrots. These are arranged in a manner that makes the exhibit instructive, attached to each root being a card giving name and actual weight per acre of the crop from which taken. Another interesting portion of the exhibit is one which demonstrates | the difference in the results obtained when manure is used and when it is not used. In mangolds 44 tons per acre were obtained with manure and G tons per acre with no manure, while in swedes the weights were respectively 38 tons and 14 tons. A novelty among soft turning is shown in the form of Early American Purple Top, taken from a crop Welding 41 tons per acre. Seed was obtained from America, and the turnips Were grown on the Model Farm last vear and this year with very satisfactory results. It is quite different from the other varieties shown as regards its manner of growth—it sits on top of the ground, is a quick maturer and a good keeper.
HONEY SECTION. A demonstration of how to handle bees was given yesterday at 2.30 p.m. by Mr. E. Beal, also at 8 p.m. by the secretary of the local association. The method of quietening the bees and subsequent handling was clearly shown. The hive operated on showed several frames of brood, which is unique for the time of the year. A feature was the storing of new honey, which is probably got from the accacias now in bloom. CLOSING DAY TO-DAY. To-day will see the closing of the Winter Show, and in order to make it the most successful yet held in the history of the society the weather only needs to remain fine, and there is every indication that it will. Those who have not yet visited the show should certainly not fail to take advantage of this opportunity, as the show is worthy of inspection. In the evening the Citizens' Band will again be present.
