There are 131 dead as the result of the Valence picture theatre panic, and hundreds were injured. The scene was appalling. Four thousand were present, i The Are was trivial, tat the stampede was terrifying, and piles of struggling women and children choked the turning of the staircase. The Bishop of Valence was present, and tried to calm the audience. Eventually he ordered the orchestra to play the "Marseillaise" "which gradually allayed the panic, tut 1 death had dona ghastly work. The walls of the stairs were spattered with blood; many were wounded ia breaking the windows. The men of the audience behaved well in the rescue work.
