Favored by fine weather yesterday, there was a very large attendance throughout the day and evening at the Winter Show in the Coronation Hall on the occasion of People's Day. Though the Arrangement of the exhibits allows for spacious passage ways, the crowd was so dense that it was difficult at times to move round. Those who attended found much to inspect and admire, and many were the congratulations that the officials received on the success that has been achieved, and, from the enthusiasm displayed by all, there is every reason to believe that that success will be maintained, as farmers now realise that it is their own ahow, and they are, accordingly, supporting it. Since the Show opened, quite a number of new members have joined the Society. Various trade displays were all well patronised, and the Bide shows all did .good business. The ladies' committee, who have charge of the catering, h>d a very busy time, but the busier they are the better they are pleased, as their desire is to improve the position of the Society, a desire worthy of emulation. The secretary's department was all that could be desired. In the evening the Citizens' Band, under Conductor McLeod, rendered a fine programme. SCHOOLS' RURAL EXHIBIT. The schools' rural exhibit is this year undoubtedly the best that has teen staged at a New Plymouth Show, it being particularly interesting and instructive. The improvement must be regarded as a result of the increasing interest that is being taken in the rural work in schools by the teachers and the more general recognition of the value of the subject ■by the general public. The entries in nearly all the competition classes were good, and the result is a very fine display of all the branches of j the work. The school garden notebooks, both primary and secondary, are very j good, and give a good index of the scope and teaching of the subject in some of the best schools.

The interest that has been taken by the children in the collection of seeds is shown 'by the large entries and the high quality of some of the seed sent in. The newly instituted classes in photography of rural work have brought in soiie very good work. In the collection of weeds the entry is of outstanding merit, and the value of this work, when taken in conjunction with the treatment of the different weeds, can hardly be over-estimated.

In the competition for roots grown in school gardens the entries sent in by some of the schools, notably Norfolk Road, were very good. Among the other competitions were notes on lucerne growing, potato growing, plant propagation, plans of school grounds, and some interesting graphs of herd yields, manurial trials, etc. A particularly interesting section is the general exhibit, which consists largely of work carried out at the Boys 1 High School. The instructive features of this exhibit include a seed-testing bon for the germination of seeds, culture solutions with broad beans, artificial methods of preserving milk, mustard growing in .different types of soil, and two barley plants; showing the value of rolling in encouraging tillering. Experiments have been set up to show by simple methods (hat the soil is in need of lime, the value of a soil-mulch in conserving the water supply in the soil, the bad results that follow the excessive use of very soluble artificial manures, and the presence of bacteria in the soil. A plant of prairie grass showing eight days' growth demonstrates the value of this grass for winter fodder in Taranaki. There are also interesting roots of lucerne taken from crops at different stages and plants of Italian lupin showing the great growth made on the subsoil at the Central School. It is a very valuable plant for green-manuring purposes, particularly as it is a legume. The educational value and the neat "iTTT-T 1 * exhibit rifat griat

credit on the work of Mr. Connell and Mr. Syrne, the agricultural instructors : who charge of the exhibit, THE POULTRY SHOW. The poultry show, which opened yesterday in the poultry annexe is the most 'successful that ha 9 yet been held in connection with the Winter Show. The entries exceed those of last year by nearly 200, and the benching of the birds reflects gTeat credit on the committee, there being a uniformity of the pens now that not only adds to the appearance of the show but also enables the birds to be viewed better. In this direction, the thanks of the committee are due to the Opunake Poultry Club for the loan of 112 large pens. There were quite a number of trophies to compete for, as the North Island Association had alloted championships for white Plymouth rocks, English brown leghorns, dragoon pigeons, and fantail pigeons to this show, aid, in addition, the New Zealand Leghorn Club held its Bhow here. Their valuable trophies were competed for, and some idea of the quality of the Taranaki birds may be gleaned from the fact that the majority of the trophies remain in Taranaki, despite strong competition from other parts of the North Island. Judging started early, and was kept going all day, but so large were the classes in some cases, and so keen the cbmpetition, that it was late in the afternoon before judging finished; indeed, four classes of over 20 exhibits each took hearly four hours to decide. The championships were won as follows: White Plymouth rocks: W. Cullen (Palmerston North). English brown leghorns: Stewart & Landsbefg (Normanby). Fantail pigeons: 0. C. Ayten (Waitara). Mr. D. Murphy, of New Plymouth, scored heavily with his white cock utility I leghorn, winning the Utility White Leghorn Shield for the 'best bird in the Utility classes, also the Hawkins Cup for the best utility bird in light breeds, a club special, and also a special for best of opposite sex to best bird. The American White Leghorn Shield "for best bird in the club show was won by E. Evans, of Palmerston North, while the Collinson & Cunninghame Shield for best white or brown leghonr in the show was won by A. P. Lister, of Frankley Park.
