LAND FOR SOLDIERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Lands announced today that his Department had completed the purchase of about 600 acres near Palmerston, to be settled by returned soldiers. EIGHT HOURS FOR, POLICEMEN. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Justice told a deputation from the Public Service Association to-day that the introduction of an eight-hour day in the police force was being tried in Wellington, and if it was a success here it would be brought into force all over the Dominion. Members of the force were not unanimously in favor of it, however, and they had written him saying that they could not march for eight hours on the Wellington pavements., Sergt. LopdeU, who was present, representing the force, said he was surprised to hear what the Minister had said. He was sure the force would be indebted to the Minister for the opportunity of giving the scheme a trial. NAPIER'S DOINGS. Napier, Last Night. At the Supreme Court Lyell Henry | was found not guilty of indecent assault on a girl of 6. A meeting of householders to-night decided to form a consumers' association to protect their interests, and called on the Government to take steps to reduce the cost of living. A special meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association passed a resolution emphatically protesting against any attempts being made by religious speakers to cause dissension in the N.ZJR..SA., and upholding Sir. Seymour in hia attitude toward this mischief-making section of the community. At a public meeting in the Municipal Theatre the following resolution was carried: That a vigorous programme of railway construction for the Norta Island be urged upon the Government, and to this end we join with Auckland and Taranaki in insisting upon the immediate and vigorous prosecution of lines already authorised and commenced, more particularly the East Coast railway linking up Napier and Gisbome.
