THE MEAT INDUSTRY.
(FREEZING AND LOADING. Palmerston N., June 7. At a meeting of the Farmers' Union to-day, when the question of lack of freezing space was mentioned, Mr. Pcarce said that from investigations made in Wellington by himself, the trouble lay with the labor laws. One freezing work's at present was only putting through 2000 head per day when it was capable of 5000. He had watched the loading of the boats, and as far as he.could see the only man on the wharf who was doing any sweating was the one who was selling newspapers. There was plenty of space to spare, but what was wanted was men to kill stock and load it.
The speaker also advocated better facilities for loading meat from the trains to the 'boats. The present method of dumping on the wharf was unnecessary as well a<» unhygienic. In this he was supported by several other members, one of whom remarked that he had seen a sling of meat dumped on to the wharf, which apparently was unswept.
