THE WINTER SHOW.

The Winter Show of the Taranakr Metropolitan Agricultural Society is always an attractive exhibition, and, judging by the official catalogue, the tenth annual fixture, which opens at the Coronation Hall to-day, con. ng till the end of the week, should have a greater drawing power than its predecessors. No Society of this kind can stand still; it must either go backwardsor forwards, fflia Taranaki Society found this out by experience, and, to tse credit of the enthusiastic officials, a progressive policy was entered ujpon that is carrying the Society along the right road. Public interest is awaya stimulated by the proof of the existence of a progressive spirit in any institution that has for its object the hoping forward of individual enterprise, and, as the dairying industry is the mainstay of Taranaki, the Agricultural Shows are given hearty support by the community, the experience gained by the Society's officials at each show is reflected in the improved attractions and facilities at succeeding events; hence there are always novel features awaiting patrons, and it is interesting to compare these features from year to year. The butter and cheese exhibits include a good number from factories outside the Province, thus giving an additional zest to the competitions!. Those not directly interested in dairy products will find fruit, vegetables (an extensive collection), and field work in large variety. All parents should be interested in the school gardens competition, seed and root collections by school children, and the numerous primary school classes, while the farming community will find many classes of exhibits to claim their attention. Housekeepers will naturally be interested in the home industries, which this year are very numerous, while 'beekeepers are well catered for. Every one is more or less interested in poultry, and, as the North Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association has allotte'd to this Show the championships for white Plymouth Rocks, English brown Leghorns, Dragoon and Fantail pigeons, this section of the Show will be particularly attractive and will be worth inspection. It is, in fact, one of the most prominent features of the Show. Machinery and side shows, together with all the other items that go to make up a first class show, including refreshments and. music, all await the crowd that is expected on each day of the Show. The Society is doing all in its power to advance the best interests of the district, and it may confidently be expected that the public will show its appreciation of those efforts by being present. That their time and money will be spent to. advantage goes without saying.
