THE LEAGUE GAME.

NEW ZEALAND AGAIN DEFEATED.

The League football match between New South Wales and New Zealand today was played in the presence of nearly 50,000 people. From the start the game was hjqrd rtlnd forceful, the visitors' weight frequently giving them the advantage in close work, but this was more than counter-balanced by the speed of the Welshmen in the open. The only change in the home team was Johnston replacing Halloway. A few minutes after the commeneemen a rush by New Zealand enabled McGregor to score a try, which was unconverted. After a deal of open play, Harder secured the ball and crossed the line after a great run, Oxford goaling. A few minutes later Oxford kicked a penalty. Some hard and rough play followed, and Burge scored a try, which was unconverted, making the half-time scores: New South Wales 10, New Zea- ! land 3.

On resuming, New Zealand brought the ball smartly down, and Mitchell, who had taken the place of Laing, scored, but the try was not converted. Another penalty goal was kidked by Holder. Then Mitchell made a fine run and crossed the line, but the try was unconverted. During some rough play following McCarthy (a Welsh back) was injured and was removed. Ryan was next to score, Horder converting, and a few minutes from time Burge secured a try, which was not goaled, making a final scores

THE CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTION.

At to-night's meeting of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, the secretary stated that the following cablegram had been received from the English Union on June 4:—'lf cable insisted,,yes; but cabling strongly deprecated. Writing." This reply meant that if the New Union played the amended rules its action would entail secession from the English union. Consideration of the question was deferred pending receipt of the letter from England. Consideration of a suggestion from the New South Wales union to hold a inference controlling Rugby bodies in Australasia to discuss matters connected with the game and forward recommendations for improvement to the TiWi.t. onion was also deferred.

The North Island v. South Island match was fixed to take place in Wellington on September 20 The Waihi union asked permission to withdraw from the South Auckland union and affiliate with the Thames onion. The matter was referred to the Auckland and South Auckland unions for joint consent.

It was decided to expend £2OO on school football.

C. Kitto, of Wellington, were appointed to fill the vacancies: on the committee. WELLINGTON RESULTS. At Wellington on Saturday Petone beat Oriental by 14 to 3, Varsity drew with Sehvyn, 6 points each, and Athletic beat Wellington 35 to nil. SOUTHERN COMPETITIONS At Kaponga on Saturday the local seniors were defeated by Hawera by 20 points to nil. For the winners triea wero scored by Bailey (2), L. Hunt (2), Gibson, and Whittington, three of which were converted by Bishop, Bailey, and Wills respectively. At Manaia, Okaiawa seniors defeated Waimato by 3 points to nil, C. Radford scoring a try.

In the junior competition Hawera 8 (try by Conza, converted by R. Winkß, who also kicked a penalty goal) beat Okaiawa 3 (try by Jurd). In the second junior competition Nortnanby beat Okaiawa by 20 to nil, and Waimate beat Technical School by 17 to 3. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. The weekly meeting of the above association was hold last night, the chairman (Mr. G. Hopkins) presiding. The following appointments were made for this week:— THURSDAY FIRST JUNIORS Midhirst v. Eltham, at Stratford, Mr. tCuttall; Inglewood v. Boys' High School, at Inglewood, Mr. Spurdle; Clifton v. Tukapa, at Waitara, .Mr. Roberts; Star v. Toko, at New Plymouth, Mr. West. SECOND JUNIORS, Star v. Stratford, at New Plymouth, Mr. Roch; Eltham v. Inglewood, at Eltham, Mr. Thompson.

SATURDAY SENIORS,

Rahotu v. New Plymouth Old Boys, at Rahotu, Mr. Roch; Star v. Okatu, at New Plymouth, Mr. Andrews. Owing to the unsatisfactory state of the second juniors competition for Saturday, and also the shortage of referees, no appointments were made. As several members are engaged this week owing to the Winter Show, it was impossible to fill all the mutches.

On the motion of the chairman, it was resolved that no further appointments be made by this association until they have official information from the Rugti'y Union as to the matches to be played the grounds, and the official starting tame. "
