BESTOWAL OF HONORS.
A LIVELY DEBATE. Received June 8, 11.5 p.m. London, June 7. In the House of Commons a lively debate took place on a motion condemning the present system o£ bes.towiwr honors.
Lord Hugh Cecil and others strongly urged that every honor should be submitted to a committee of the Privy Council, so that no suspicion would 1)6 possible that they were corruptly recommended to the Sovereign. Other critics urged that all subscriptions to party funds should be made public.
Mr. Bonar Law, replying, denied that the honors were sold. The Government was willing to accept a resolution that honors should not be given directly of indirectly for subscriptions to party funds, but raid it was impossible and undesirable to forbid public rewards for party services while the party system continued. Men naturally believed their political work was for the country's good.
The motion was defeated by 112 to 50.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable AsSn.
