The Daily News. TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 1919. THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.
It is matter for regret that another birthday anniversary of King George should find peace still unproclaimed. But for this, there ia no doubt, the occasion would have been marked with unusual celebrations. While, under the circumstances, it is out of the question to observe the event otherwise than as one devoid of all ceremony, it yet enables us the more to recognise how thoroughly the Empire and its Sovereign are one in heart and purpose. In no period of British history has there been such complete accord between the people and their King as during the recent war. In fact, all the members of the Royal Family have set a noble example of courage, sympathy, confidence and helpfulness that had a most inspiring effect on the people of the Empire. Our King has proved himself not only a worthy occupant of the throne, i but a true man ofinfinitehe^to.
the nation in its mosc trying crisis He has never failed to do the right thing at the right time, or to say just what was most helpful when a timely utterance was most valuable. He is the embodiment of the nation in all its aspirations. Never was the head of the Empire so sorely tried, and he has emerged from' the ordeal with <1 triumph that has enlarged the loyalty and love of the people, greatly as it had grown during the reign of Victoria. As the result of the war, the sway of Britain and the beneficent influence of British ruls has been considerably enlarged, covering the birthplace of human ity, as well as that of religion and country famous in Bible history, as well as some cf the newest possessions in different parts of tlia world. Although King George rules over a democratic Empire, there is not the slightest ineogruity in this constitutional monarchy. Rather it is a marvellous illustra tion of how ruler and people can be so unified that additional strength and good government is obtained. Well may the British be proud of their King and the Royal Family, and the uppermost wish in the' mind of the people may well be "Long Live the King!"
