Time, 2min. 24 3-ssea, NOTES BY "MOTt!ROA." GREAT NORTHERN PROSPECTS. The Great Northern Steeplechase will be the principal attraction at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Unfortunately, through mishaps and oversights, the field will not be representative of the Dominion'*; steeplecliasing strength, and an acceptance of twelve (with a probability of only about eight starters) is a poor response for a 1500 sovs. prize. Wairnai and Troublesome have monopolised the betting so far, and they appear to be the mowt seascmed jumpers in the race. Sleight of Hand and Sir Fisher may not start, and Master Lupin has to be taken on trust for such a searching tryout. Arlington has a nice handy weight, and jumps splendidly, but the hill and the distance may find him out. The same remarks apply to Bore. Tenacious may find three and a half miles.' beyond his staying powers, and Tarero, on Hawera form, will be outpaced. Te Onga and Vacuum do not look attractive, but Grafton Tot is a fine big fellow that might accomplish anything. He is a hard horse to manage, however, and Wanganui running proved that T. O'Connel was no earthly use to him. Those "double-punters" who have a leg in with either Waimai or Troublesome look to have excellent prospects of adding to their wealth to-morrow. WINNING TWO-YEAR-OLDS.

Ay far as our two-year-olds arc concerned the 1918-1!) racing season is now practically over, and the scores registered by the principal youngsters are, therefore, of interest. From an exchange we clip the following figures: Surveyor £3050, Warplane £1825, Affectation £1630, Hetaua £1605, Crenides £1370, Miss Mimic £945. Amythas £B4O, Bindle £755, Ermine £740, 'Rpyal Stag £590, Prince Charleroi £435, Murihiku £405, Sundance £4OO, Mistress Biddy £3BO, Red Pepper £315, Lucid £3lO, Mistian £275, Lady Ball £273, Macduff £275, 1 Some Kid £265, Miss Gold £235.

Bitholia £265, Catiowindra £260, and Solfanello £250.

The English Derby will be run at Epsom on Wednesday, ' The Panther has been a hot favorite right through, and the blue riband is looked upon as a good thing for him. Others mentioned in the betting are Buchan, Stefan the Great, Lord Basil, and Paper Money. Details of Finmarlc's St. Leger show that the race was,' never in doubt. Run in the mud, Finmark was backed to a shade of odds on, and, leading all the way, the ex-New Zealander scored in hollow fashion. The stake was worth £1484 to the winner. Considerable interest is being taken m the proposed meeting between the crack pacers, Author Dillon and Cathedral Chimes, in the St. George Handicap, run over two miles on the tecond day I (June 3) of the Canterbury Park T.C. winter meeting. It should he a race worth going a long way to see. Marqueteur and Volo are in the boom for the Raukawa Cup, which will be run to-morrow. Rawakore and Silver Link read wejf in the Taipua Handicap, antf Black Mark, Master Webster, Pretty Bobby, and Some Girl may also show up at the meeting.

Up to the end of last week the leading winning horsemen were: H. Gray 76J, C. Emerson 52%, R. Bagby 45, B. Peeley 43J, H. Young 42, A. Reed 41, L. Morris 37*. G. Young 20J, R. Reed 27J, L. Hagerty 27, and A. J. McFlynn 25. Mr. H. A. Knight's three geldings, Bore, Euripos.', and Post Haste, have won between them £ll4O in jtakes at the Egmont and Wangaqui winter meetings; and this without prejudicing their prospects to any marked extent at forthcoming winter meetings. Their form has been consistent, throughout, Euripos winning twico and being third once in four starts, and Post Has.te was twice placed.

Poitrel is at. present head atid shoulders above the distance performers racing in Australia. At the recent A.J.C. meeting ho proved hiy superiority at weight-for-age over a mile and a half, two miles, and three miles. There will be eometihng doing when Gloaming, Saaanof, Poitrel, Biplane, Vinmark, and, possibly, Desert Gold meet in the spring. Lady Black paid a nice price in the Telegraph Handicap at Carterton, and some of the Bar Vons had to "cough" pretty heavily in consequence. Bio ftrande, Lady Sefton, and Inora will represent vVanganui at Tauherenikau to-morrow,«where good money awaits; the trio. About seven months ago we were regaled with newspaper notices of the alleged death at Westport of the well known sporting rhymester, "Banjo" Patterson. Sydney papers just to hand state that Major A. B. ("Banjo") Patterson has recently returned to that city after three years.' service in Egypt, so the Westport report is hereby erased from the records, and the perpetrator of the fabrication is fined three long beers (nayable at tliis office).
