POLICE STRIKE.
THE TROUBLE AVERTED. HOME SECRETARY'S FIRM ACTION. By Telegraph.—Press Aisn.—Copyright, Received June 1, 5.5 p.m. London, May 31. Mr. Sliortt, Secretary for Home Affairs, has issued a stern warning to the police force against striking. He said the Government had decided to pay a pensionable constable not less than 70s. Tho Government could have no dealings with a Policemen's Union, and any strikers would forthwith be dismissed and lose their pensions. If a strike occurred, not only special constables but every loyal citizen should come forward and assist in maintaining order. Later. The Victoria seamen have joined the Queensland decision to ignore the ballot, but New South Affiles men are confident of an overwhelming number in favor of resumption of work, thus being able to out-vote the other branches. A MASS METING. Received June 1, 11.5 p.m. London, May 31. A mass meeting of police is to be held in Hyde Park on Sunday, at which the result of the strike ballot will be an-nounced.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DISSENSION IN THE UNION. Received Jtane 2, 12.30 a.m. London, June 1. Five hundred men who dissent, from the strike policy have withdrawn from the Police Union. The latter offered to postpone action if Mr. Lloyd George would consent to an Inquiry similar to that of Mr. Justice Sankey.
