Gibbs' fine property and on to Tongaponitu and over the bridge. Here the party enjoyed a fine repast of ginger pop and sandwiches. After resting their horses for a while, they recrosi-.ed the bridge, passed through the township of Tongaporiitu, and decided to take the inland route home.
The -going was very pleasant for about two miles, when they began to ascend Mt. Messenger (the hill about which ko much is heard at present). Here the remain': of burnt cars, broken gigs and buggies show up at intervals, denoting what a costly business the want of metal is. As the day was drawing in the party decided to come home via Gilbert track. This track, little used at present. will be remembered by the old hands in the pioneering days. Coining up this 1 track the party had to go in single file and again climb the range that shelters the Pukoaruhe district from the south wind. Arriving at the top a most glorious view was witnessed. Spreading out to the right as far as the eye can see, one can view the coast-line part Mokau and on and on. To the left Paritutu. and Mount Kgmont loom up over the green fields of this beautiful coast. The sun was just setting as the party was skirting the National Park at the back of the White Cliffs, where the giant ratas and puriris are s.een in their majestic splendour. Then easy down the slopes and over the tablelands and again on to the beach. The going was fairly solid throughout, and it speaks well for the horses that at the end of the day they still had plenty of go, as they seemed to join in the fun with their riders, as they splashed through the pond while coming off the beach "Homeward Bound."
