CANTERBURY" PRODUCE MARKET. j Chrißteliurcb, May 27. The long- dry spell has been broken by cold south-west rain, with snow onthe ranges and on Banks Peninsula. Tlic principal effect it is likely to have on the market will be the hardening of prices of oats and oatsheaf chaff. There ure practically no oats offering by growers, although Algerians and good Dnns arc in demand for seed, but they are 'difficult to procure. Growers do not like to part with their oats in case they should want them for their own use, and now that the weather has broken they will no doubt be still more reluctant to sell. The same remarks apply to oatsheaf chaff, and although the nominal price is £5 15s to £(i per ton at country stations there are very few sellers- The partial removal of the embargo on the ■shipment of potatoes to Australia has luot affected the market to any extent, (owing to there being no shipping available, and it is not known what the ruljing prices will bo in the Sydney market when the shipping strike ends. Buyers have lively been giving £(i to £6 5s per ton at country stations, but they are indifferent about operating at present. It is reported that some of the North island merchants are trying to resell potatoes, and if that is so it may tend to loosen the market. The nominal quota-' lions for onions is £7 10b to £8 per ton at country stations, but'tiierq is little business doing.
