, J«MTARY ADOPT REPRESSIVE MEASURES. MANY THOUSANDS KILLED. London, May 10. reports from India show that the recent rising was serious and well-organ-ised. The moderation of the authorities_ at Delhi encouraged the mob to extreme violence at lAhoie and Amrits>ar, where several whites were killed.
bX both places the military were compelled to use severe repressive measures. A great mob overawed one quarter of Amritsar. Machine-guns were played on them, and the Gurkhas could not be restrained- A thousand lives were lost. EquAlly severe repression was required at Lahore. It is believed that 4000 were killed and younded altogether. This energy was not expected by the leaders and Tie difficulty simmered down.—Aus. tf.Z. Cable Assoc.
