In reference to the visit of Lord Jellicoe, Sir James Allen stated yesterday that he did not think the Government could subsidise moneys granted by local bodies for the entertainment of the visitors.—Press Association.

At Palmerston North on Monday Mrs Dumbleton, licensee of the Cafe de Paris Hotel, Palmerston North, was fined £5 and costs 7s, and the barman (Fenton) 20s and costs 7s, for supplying liquor to soldiers on a troop train. Defendant stated that she was under the impression that she could supply soldiers with drink at the hotel, but not with bottled liquor to take away.

At last night's meeting of the Citizens' Band Committee, the conductor (Mr. McLeod) said the housing problem in New Plymouth had affected the band, as recently they had lost two valuable cornet players—one on account of not beting able to get a house, and the other through being unable to get a suitable shop.

It was after 9 o'clock before the New Plymouth mail train arrived at Wellington on Monday night. The delay, it appears, was caused by a goods train from Wanganui to Hawera being held up op the hill to Westmere. The train had ultimately to be divided anil taken up to the top of the hill in sections before the main track was cleared for the mail train.

A return prepared by the Department of Agriculture shows that there are fortyfour meat freezing works in New Zealand. The killing capacity of these works is 3860 cattle and 129,150 sheep per day. The aggregate storagfe capacity of the works is 7,385,272 freight carcases of mutton. A freight earcase is 60Jb. The actual capacity of the works is increased by the practice of telescoping the carcases for economy of space. Mr. R. Hampton, president o* the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, who is visiting the Taranaki district, addressed a well-attended meeting of the local branch of the society last evening. Mr. F. Jeavous presided. During the course of his address Mr. Hampton covered the work accomplished by delegates at the recent conference, in which proposals for increased pay and the necessity for effecting improvements in the general conditions of the railwaymen were mentioned. At the close of the address the president was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his able and lucid address.

The weather took a decidedly wintry turn yesterday, and the cold winds and piercing showers were anything but pleasant for those obliged to be out of doors. Although bleak in New Plymouth, the conditions were worse down the line, heavy showers and a cold southerly breeze prevailing at Stratford, whilst iii Inglewood there was a slight fall of snow, which is rather early„and will go badly with the cattle. At the breakwater shipping felt the force of the changed conditions, the Karu making/ a late arrival, having been obliged to shelter at Pelorus Sound, whilst the Kaiapoi was unable to leave for Greymouth yesterday, and remains in port awaiting moderation of. the weather.
