GENERAL RICHARDSON.
ENTHUSIASTIC DUNEDIN RECEPTION. PRACTICAL ADVICE ABOUT RETURNED MEN. Dunedin. May 25. General Richardson arrived here last evening, and was accorded a royal reception. He was loudly cheered at the station as he passed through the ranks of returned men to a carriage drawn by six artillery horses, and was driven to the Otago Club, where another enthusiastic reception awaited him. He was carried shoulder high, and the crowd would not be satisfied until he had given them a short address and promised to speak more fully to a gathering of returned men. To an Otago Daily Times reporter Gen eral Richardson had something to say about the necessity for continuing Territorial training on the lines suggested by experiences of war. On the repatriation problem General Richardson expressed the opinion that the Government would have to buy up small sections, erect houses, and start men on such occupations as poultry farming. He also suggested thj establishment in each district of a small bureau where men could get information as to settle down. His advice to returned men was to get into plain clothes as quickly as possible and get back to work. He appealed to the public for forgiveness for small delinquencies on the part of men just returned. The public should try and realise its indebtedness to the soldier. "Don't offer him charity," •said the general; "give him a chance to earn a living. Especially is that the case with the disabled man."
