Mr. Newton King leaves by the mail train this morning for Wellington. He expects to return by the end of the week. The Rev. R. Frankljn, M.A., vicar of Roseneath, has been appointed organising secretary for the diocese of Wellington. He will take up his duties early in July. Mr. William Peet, an old resident of the Oamaru district, has died at the age of 81 years. Mr. Peet, who came to New Zealand in 1859, served against the ; Maoris in the Auckland district. Tl» Rev. O. Champion, who a few years, ago was a well known resident of New 1 Plymouth, died at Auckland last week, ' aged 01 years. ( A Wellington telegram reports the death of Mr. Alex. Barron, fqrmerly chairman of the Board of Land Purchase Commissioners and under-seeretary for Crown lands. He was 79 years of age. Speaking at a banquet at Heefton recently, Mr. J. Colvin, M.P. for Buller, announced his intention of not contesting a seat at the next election. It is thought in political circles (states a southern paper) that Mr. Colvin will be called to the Upper House.

As the tenure of the appointment of .sir Francis B«l to the Legislative Council would expire on July 10 next, being seven years from the date of his call, and as it is possible that the GovernorGeneral may not have returned to New Zealand from Samoa by that date, Sir Francis Bell lias resigned his seat, and has been reappointed to the Cabinet.Presu Assu.

Judge H. W. Brabant died at Napier on .Sunday, aged about 85. Deceased was well known in the Bay of Plenttv benig the first S.M. at Opotiki and later b.M. for Tauranga, Rotorua, Wanganui Auckland, and, finally, at Napier, where he retired to-private life. He was a Judge of the Native Lands Court, and aid-much good work in settling Maori questions.—Press Assn. Mr. E. A. Butt, who has been in charge of the sick and wounded records at:the Hawera.
