FOOTBALL.
MAORIS v. OTAGO. Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Maori Pioneer Battalion team met the Otago representatives to-day in perfect football weather. The visitors were a sturdy lot, being particularly good on the line-out work, but their passing lacked finish. Mackerett, O'Connor and Holmes scored for Otago, and Wilkinson and Hall for the visitors. The goal-kicking wa» poor, no goals being registered, and Otago won by 8 points to 6.' The match caused great interest, and was witnessed by about 5000 spectators. HAWERA PJ.B.C. V. HAWERA T.O. On Wednesday tho Hawera Presbyterian Junior Bible Class defeated Hawera Technical College by 19 points.to nil. Foden scored two tries and kicked a penalty goal, and also kicked a neat goal. Vowlesa also kicked a penalty goal, and Brown scored a try. Mr. A, Sprutt was referee. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION. A meeting of the management committee was held at Stratford on Thursday evening. There were present: Messrs. J. McLeod (chair), M. Harkness, L. Beamish, W. B. Fearon, A. Lees, Lyall, Ryder, and R. Tyrer (secretary). A telegram was received from Opunake Club protesting against the Rahotu nomination of a senior team in the northern division being accepted, as it was part of their district. It was pointed out that the Bahotu players would not Join with Opunake, and rather than lose players the committee decided, to accept the nomination. Mr. .T. McLeod was appointed delegate to the Now Zealand Rugby Union meeting to bo held at Wellington on May 29., ■ A letter was received from the Maori Pioneer Battalion, asking for a match with the Union's representatives. It wa3 decided that *f Wellington were unable to play at Hawera during Winter Show week, the Maoris should be invited to play in their place. ; *i» It was also decided to play Wanganui later dn in the season, Wanganui also having asked for the same date —June 3. , Mr. L. Beamish was authorised to procure a supply of jerseys for the representative team. Messrs. J. McLeod, A. Lees and the searetary were appointed an executive committee. - SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Messrs. Lyall, Fearon and Curteis who wera appointed a committee to enquire into and report on the question of School football in the southern division, submitted a report outlining a scheme for the encouragement of school football. The idea was to divide the schools 11 Taranaki into four group 3, and appoint a teacher In nch group to take charge of tho arranging of 'matches between the respective - schools. Where the smaller schools could not raise a full fifteen players, two or three of these schools would combine together and put one team in the fleld. Also to give the smaller schools a chanco against the larger schools the latter would be limited to playing not more than eight sixth standard boys in any one team. The southern district Is divided into four groups—Hawera centre, Eltham centre, Kaponga centre and Opunake centre. The smaller schools are grouped, two, and in some cases three, small schools combining to enter one team. The Hawera centre, for Instance, Includes the following schools: Mokoia and Wliakamara; Ohimgni and Meremere; Fra?cr Road, Tokaora and Araratn; Normanby; Olmiawa; Hawera. A committee, consisting of a teacher from each of the four groups, was appointed to organise the games according to locality, to arrange grounds, referees and fixtures. The committee recommended: (a) That books of rules be supplied to each member of the centre committee; (b) that all players must be on the roll of the primary school which they represent; (3) that each player be certified to by tho teacher of the school; (d) that a list of players so certified be handed to the referee Immediately before the commencement of each match, such list to be forwarded to the sectary of the Rugby Union; (e) that no school be allowed to play more than 8 (eight) players from standard 6 pupils in one team, but that the number of teams from any ono school be unlimited. Members of the Rugby Union commended tho scheme and the report was unanimously adopted. A desire was expressed that the teachers In the northern division consider the question of adopting a similar scheme, dividing the district into the following centres: New Plymouth, Clifton, Inglewood and Stratford, and probably coastaL The following selectors for the representative teams were appointed: South—Messrs. J. S. McKay, L. 0. Beamish, and D. Malone (Riverlea) ; North—Messrs. M. Harkness, A. L. Humphries and H. L. Abbott. Tho chairman stated that, about 40 teams would be playing rugby in Taranakl this season, apart from the Walroa (Patea) Sub-union.
