Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P. for Taumaru-1 mri, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train on Saturday night from Wellington, where he has been on business connected with his constituency. Mr. W. W. Thomson, chairman of the West End School Committee, who recently underwent an operation in the public hospital, is making a good recovery. Mr. J. B. Kichards, president of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, returned to Stratford by the mail train on Saturday night, after a holiday of three weeks' duration. He motored through the Ohura to Te Kuiti, and afterwards went on to Botorua,
A visitor to the Gonville School opening ceremony on Wednesday was Sergeant Tuffin, of Turu-turu-mokai fame, who in spite of his 83 years was still hale and vigorous. Sergeant Tuffin was wounded in no less than five placet) at the historic fight. Sergeant Tuffin, Mr. Beamish, of Patea, and one other who happens to bo bed-ridden, are, we believe, the sole survivors of this engagement.—Patea Press. Mrs. Burgess ((Mayoress of New Plymouth), representing the Women's National Reserve, Messrs C. H. Burgess (Mayor of New Plymouth), F. T. Bellringer (town clerk), IR. Masters (chairman of the Taranaki Education Board), amd S. G. Smith, MP, representing the New Plymouth High Sehooh Board, who have been attending the Town Planning Conference at Wellington, returned by the mail train on Saturday night. Messrs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman of directors of the .Toll Dairy Co.) and H. D. Forsyth (chairman of directors of the Eltham Dairy Company) leave early in June for America and the Continent, in the interests of the dairying industry of Taranaki. During their absence Mr. A Morton will succeed Mr. Murdoch as chairman of directors of the Egmont Box Company, and Mr. Fishir (Wairarapa) will succeed Mr. Forsyth as chairman of directors of the New Zealand Rennet Company.
At Mata, Eltham, on Thursday afternoon, a roll of honor was unveiled in the school. Addresses, appropriate to the occasion, were delivered by Mr. Mills, chairman of the Sehool Committee, and Hon. W. C. Carncrosa. The names of those soldiers from the district arc: E. W. Hine, L. Willy, H. Hine, H. N. Howe, J. P. Trott, L. Lewis, H. A G. Lee, J. Harrison, C, Slater, G. Burton, J. Slater, H. F. Sine, W. J. Stephens, W. A. Foster, D. J. Mannex, W. Campbell. D. H. Laurent, T. Willy, A. R. Kemp, and R. G. Davis. Of these no less than five were either killed or died of wound—H. Hine, L. Lewis, H. A. G. Lee, J. Slater, and W. Campbell.—ATgus.
Mrs. Ann Herbert, who passed away at her home, Mangorei, on Saturday, wa3 the eldest daughter of the late Job Wills, one of Taranaki's early settlers. The deceased lady arrived in New Zealand, with her parents in 1865, and three years, later married the late Mr. G. H. Herbert, who was one of the first settlers to take up land in the Upper Kent Road district, and fdr Jnany years suffered all the trials and vicissitudes of the pioneer farmers duo to lack of good roads and markets. For over forty years the late Mrs. Herbert continued to" live at Korito, and her ever-ready assistance and kindly disposition at all times made her a general favorite in the district, and her memory will be cherished by many who remember many acts of kindly help and Belf-sacrifice in times of sickness, especially in the old days when the district was practically cut off from outside comniunication. A large family is left to mourn their loss—Messrs. George H. Herbert (Urenui), William W. Herbert (Tanranga), Hugh H. Herbert (Waikato), Barton J. Herbert, Ernest Herbert and Richard Herbert (Mangorei), and Corporal A. L. Herbert and Sapper Sidney Herbert, who were members of the earlier drafts of the New Zealand Expeditionarv i Forces and have not yet returned to New Zealand; Mrs. W. H. Paynter (Stratford), Mrs. P. Crean (Albfet Road), Mrs. A. H. Robertson 'Te Aroha), Mrsl W. Johnston (Cheal Road), Mrs. J. Keegan (Cardiff), Miss Grace Herbert (Stratford), and Miss Ruby Herbert (Mangorei). ' '
