WANGANUI NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") Beautiful weather favored the Wanganui Jockey Club on Thursday, and sie course was in great order, as the times recorded testify. Racing was good throughout the day, and winners proved easy to pick. Piecent form turned out well, Marqueutur, Polthogue, and Astinome continuing their successes, while Demos, Omahu, and Euripos improved upon their recent good showings. The whining doubles, both flat and over lences were well supported, though the failures of Rewipoto and Paraoa were very costly to Taranaki punters. Demos was made an odds on favorite in the Borough Handicap, and- everything came Vib way. First out, he never looked like getting beaten, and the least said about his opponents the better. Silver Link ran well for a bit under her big weight, and may do better on the second day. Volo was running on at the finish, and should be all the better for the gallop. The Hack Steeplechase was the best of good things for Polthogue, who held the field easy at any stage of the race. He only made one faulty jump, and on Thursday's form should keep on winning. Master Webster made a great effort to head ■ him off while going along the back the last time, but the Patronus gelding was more than equal to the task. Outside the dividend-payers they were a poor lot.

!.,'• The. public were not far astray when itheyipicked out Master Strowan and Coalition as the best of the field of six in the big steeples, and, with a decent •passage, the favorite would have been in find dried. Arlington made the pace for two miles, but Coalition joined him six furlongs- from home. Masted' Strowan, who had been lying last, made a move forward as they ran out of the straight for the final lap, but IFoeman smacked him and sent him right back again. 'After that the top-weight fenced badly, but his pace between the fences brought him up again. At the last obstacle Coalition was just in front of Kaston's crack, but swerved, and Master Strowan hit his quarter as they landed. Coalition recovered quickest, and ran in a winner by four lengths. It was an unsatisfactory race, and Flynn. the rider of Foeman, was lucky to get off with a. £lO fine for his part of the scramble. Yellow and Black, who was dead tired, did not rise an inch at the last fence—the deadly hen-coop—rand fell heavily, breaking his back. His lady owner did not relish the idea of shooting the horse, so a veterinary surgeon severed an artery and allowed the horse to pßss away peaceably. The withdrawal of Euripo9 and IJoyal Park left six verv moderate horses to contest the Ka-itoke Hack Hurdles. Omahu was sorted out as the best of u bad lot, and duly landed, but. there was little merit in the performance. Lochella, who was in the boom down south, lost whatever chance he had by jumping badly.

The fHd that contested the Century Hurdle ftace did not look much class, but it was a solidly run race from beginning to end, and Euripos got to the end of the two miles and a-qnarter in record time —4min. 13 2-osec. Parana wa< favofltn. hut ifw Wv lttwuMj

being kept too far away from the leaders to have any show. It is a long while since the writer hap "en a good horse so badly handled. J., nstcr and Whiro made the pace solid, but along the back stretch Euripos and Seadown had the leaders beaten. At this stage Yankee Jack was lying handy, but Euripos and Seadown ran clean away from him. Euripos won handsomely at the finish, but Seadown stuck gamely to his task, and ran the race of- his life. Paraoa was finishing very fast in third place, and should run better in the Great Northern. Whiro and Otter lost their riders, but neither horsemen nor horses were hurt.

The Connolly Handicap was a soft thing for Marqueteur, who was well ridden by R. Bagby. Trombone acted as pacemaker for a mile, but Marqueteur had him at any part of it, and the race was all over at the bend. Kewipoto was well up at this stage, and received a frightful thrashing in the run home, lint ho had no chanr of overhauling Marqueteur. Client was running on strongly at the finish, and got within half a length of Mattjueteiir, but the latter won with his mouth wide open. Risihgham did not run up to his track form, and Tressida also shaped badly. Cadet was reckoned the beat of good things in the Puma Hack Handicap, but the best he could do was to get beaten by a nose for Becond money. Astinome led from end to end, and won with a lot in hand from Bayberry. With Marqueteur and Client out of the way Rewipoto should have a lot to say in the settlement Of the Empire Handicap. The most dangerous of the lightweights may be Arrowfield. Demos has gone up 12 lbs in the Winter Oats to-day, and, at a difference of only 12 lbs, Silver Link should hold him safe. Tirana and Royal, Chef may prove best of the lightweights. . » A lot of good money was lost on Wapping on the first day. He got away very badly, and never got within striking distance of Astinome, though he came fast over the last two furlongs. Wapping should be worth following. Bayberry improves with every gallop, and there seems a chance of him turning out a winner after all. He was added to the list in January, and is just getting over the effects of the operation. Master Strowan's jumping on Thursday was not up to his usual high standard, but he is sure to improve in this respect in his future efforts. Thursdays gallop should sharpen him up nicely. Eiiripos will again come in for solid backing in the May Hurdles. Zola may keep him busy however. Grafton Tot pulled up lame on Thursday, and cannot be seen at his best for some time. WINTER PROSPECTS. The increased stimulus given to racing by the cessation of hostilities and the steady flow of returning soldiers gave promise of record race gatherings during the winter months, but the paucity of good jumpers threatens to stifle interest in the big cross country and hurdle events looming ahead, and the prospects of good racing appear to be anything but promising. The Egmont EVcing Club was very lucky with its jumping events, but Wanganui's experience this week was dull and dispiriting, and does not augur well for the Auckland, Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Canterbury Clubs which follow. At the present moment the "passable" 'chasers may be counted on the fingers of one hand, and unless some new blood is introduced small fields and indifferent racing appear probable. It would be hard to reckon up more than about ten or twelve good hurdlers in commission at this early stage of the winter season, but these may be added to as the season advances. It is pleasing news to hear that Sir Fisher's mishap is not regarded as serious, and the Palmerston jumper was railed through to Auckland on Thursday. Sir Fisher, Sleight of Hand, Waimai, Kauri King, and Art will stiffen, up the fields ia the Great Northerns, and they can certainly do with it.
