Mr. and Mrs. C. Carter leave for Wellington to-day to meet their son, Edgar, who is returning from the front by the Rimutaka, which is expected to reach New Zealand on Monday.
Word has been received that' Rifleman Cecil W. Revell, of Warea, who left with the 27th Reinforcements, will arrive in Wellington on May 27 on the transport Pakeha.
The Rev. R. H. Hobday, M.A., of Eltham, lias been appointed headmaster of the Wellington Diocesan Boys' School at Days' Bay. Mr. Hobday was a foundation scholar of his school, St. Paul's, London. He was a prizeman and exhibitioner of his college, Sydney Sussex, Cambridge. He took his B.A. degree with -first-class honors in the classical tripos in 1901, and his M.A. degree in 1905. Mr. Hobday rowed in. the Cambridge "May" races in 1902, and also won three college cups for rowing.—Argus.
Mr. Joseph ABher, who has been a resident of New Plymouth for nearly forty years, left by the Uarawa.last night, it being his intention to live in retirement with his eldest daughter, Mrs. W. P. Reed, at Matamata. For the past V2§ years Mr. Asher has been associated with Mr. W. P. Short; monumental mason, as outside representative. Prior to his departure the members of the staff made a presentation to him of a solid leather suitcase. The presentation was made by Mr. Short, who expressed regret at Mr. Asher's departure, but boned he would enjoy his well-earned reuremeut. The recipient suitably acknowledged the gift and good wishes.
The Rhodes Scholar, who will eater Oxford in October, 1920, will be elected next Tuesday. The Canterbury Collego candidate is Noraan Macdonald Richmond, 8.A., son of the late Mr, W. M. Richmond, solicitor. An 1851 Exhibition Scholarship, the award of which has been suspended during the war,, is also ottered by the New Zealand University this year. The candidate from Canterbury College is Eric Arnold Rowe, M.Ss., son of Mr. T. W. Rowe, the wellknown Christchurch solicitor.
The death is reported of Mr. Alfred Lindsay, the well-known boot importer and manufacturer, of Wellington lir, Lindsay, who was on his 80th year, w.as bom in Edinburgh, and was apprenticed to the boot trade in that city, completing his term in 1859. After working as a journeyman in Edinburgh for nine years, he left for New Zealand, arriring in Wellington by the ship Coleroon in 1807. He at once started in business there, and for many years carried on a boot factory. Eventually ha confined himself to the retail and importing business. He was twice married, andhas left a widow and a famijy of three sons—Mr. Alfred Lindsay, iun. (Auck- * land), and Messrs. Arthur and Charles Lindsay (Wellington)—and four daughters—Mrs. Charles Jenkins, Mr*. Samuel Roberts, and Misses Lindsay (all of W*l» lington)~27 grandchildren, and" sewn great-grandchildren.
Among the passengers duo to anlw.-at Auckland from Vancouver about the end oi the month is Commissioner Thomas Henry Howard, who was foreign secretary to the Salvation Army in Lon, don under the late General William Booth, and whp Qn iu succeeded General Bramwell Booth as chef-of-the-staff, at headquarters.
