FOR BRAVERY IN TARANAKI.

| A SCOUTMASTER HONORED.

'A silver cross for bravery was presented last evening to Scoutmaster Dent at a gathering of Scouts, which took place at the Y.M.C.A., Wellington, on Monday. The silver cross was granted to the Rev. G. W. Dent, of the Brooklyn Troop, for his gallant attempt to save the life of one of the Eltham Boy Scouts while bathing iA Opunake Bay on January 1, 1917. Mr. Dent was scoutmaster of the Eltham Troop at the time. There was a picnic on the beach on the day in question, and numbers were bathing. The Boy Scout, who wan a good swimmer, went rather far out, and got into difficulties. The lie-,: Mr. Dent at once i went to his assistance, but was dashed ! upon a hidden roa't. and, though rendered almost helpless, bravely struggled oit | Major Saudford, who' had also started ! to the boy's help, was also knocked about considerably. The boy, in the meantime, kept his wits, and floated till he was rescued. Mr. Alton, Provincial Commissioner for Wellington, \\r. presertiing the medal, *j>oke of the Rev. Mr. Peivi as a flrst- ! cum* Scout, who tried to do his good j t<ira even at the risk of hia own life. ; The Rev. Mr. Dent had done his bit, j and Mr. Allan said he hoped that every boy present would do the same whenever an opportunity came. A letter from Colonel Cos'rrove, Chief Commissioner of Scouts for New Zealand, was then read, conveying congratula-. tions and appreciation of the action of Mr. Dent. The Rev. Mr. Dent, in reply, spoke of the fact that scoutmasters learned to love their boys, and added that any scoutmaster was prepared to risk his life to save any boy. He called on the boys to live a straight life—that was what the Scout movement stood for. Captain Chudley, Master Sea Scouts, spoke on behalf of the scoutmasters present.—Dominion.
