RAILWAY VETO. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Sight. The Railway Officers' Institute to-day passed a resolution protesting against the Minister exercising his veto in the Longton appeal case. THE POTATO MARKET. Wellington, Last Night. The Hon. Mac Donald, acting-President of the Board of Trade, states that the position regarding the potato market has recently been tinder consideration, and it has now been decided that applications for permits to export will be considered by the Minister for Customs, provided the shipment is made prior to June 30. REPLACING THE AMOKURA. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister for Marine stated to-day that the two ships offered by the Admiralty to replace the Amokura. as a training ship were unsuitable for the Dominion's requirements, and it had been decided that Captain Hooper, of the Amokura, should go to England and select a ship, if possible, suitable to our needs and Sring the vessel to New Zealand. GENEROUS BENEFACTORS. , Wellington, Last Night. Three handsome donations have just been received in connection with the Trentham Dominion Scholarships Fund. Messrs John- Kirkcaldie. Sidney Kirkcaldie, and the firm of Kirkcaidic and Staints, Ltd., have each made themselves responsible for the complete education of one child of a fallen New Zealand soldier under this scheme. The children are selected by examination, and are educated and maintained until established in the profession of their choice, .the cost is £IOOO per child, thus the contributions named above total the substantial sum of £3OOO.
