LABOR PROBLEMS.

IMPROVING PAY AND CONDITIONS OF WORKERS. Received May 19, 12.15 a.m. London, May 10. The Government Committee on women's work report in favor of e'pial pay for equal work. In other cases the relative values of work should be settled by the employees' trades unions. Married men should be paid children's allowances where equal pay might otherwise lead to employment of women instead of men. Other recommendations include improved hours conditions, better sanitation, and a minimum wage sufficient to enable single women over eighteen to possess decent lodgings, food, clothes, and personal appearance; also fares, insurance, and reasonable holidays and amusement. The committee recommends that the State undertake the direct costs of maternity and widows' pensions.
