SOLDIEBS AND STRIKES. London, May 14. Questions in the House of Commons revealed tha,t a confidential circular was issued when the strikes of railwaymen, transporters and miners were threatened requesting commanding officers to report whether the troops were prepared to aseiat in a,trike breaking, also what degree of trade union sentiment existed. Mr. Guest stated that it was never intended to we Boldiers in ordinary strikes,' but on tha,t occasion the country was faced with paralysis.—Aus.Jf.Z. Gable Assn. BOOKING CLERK'S APPEAL. Wellington, May 16. In connection with the appeal of A. N. Longton, booking clerk, Lambton, against the Railway Department's decision regarding his promotion, on .the ground that he lacked a sense of discipline, and whom tile Railway Appeal Board decided unanimously in favor of at the recent sitting, it is now announced that the Minister of Railways has met hie power to veto, and reversed jtb- decision of the board. It is stated that this is the firßt occasion that the unanimous decision of the board has been vetoed since the late Hon. J. Millar was Minister for Railways. It is understood that the Railway Officers' Institute and the A.S.R.S. will take action, a* an important principle is involved.
