Captain P. V. Storkey, V.C., of Napier haa been appointed associate to Mr. Justice Sanger Owner, of Sydney, The death is announced of Mr. Benjamin Buttcrworth, at Auckland, who for many years was overseer of railway and bridge construction work. The lata Mr. Butterworth arrived in Auckland in 1885, and was in his ninety-first year.
Major T. Sutherland, while acting as clerk of the course at the Hawera races on Wednesday, was injured by Staccato rearing and falling across his horse. His injuries were not serious, however, and it is expected that he will be about again in a day or two.
His Worship the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. C. H. Burgess) leaves this morning for Wellington, where he will represent the borough at the Dominion Town Planning Conference, which ia'to be opened on Tuesday morning by the Gover-nor-General. Mr. F. T. Bellringer (town dark) will also attend the conference.
It was recently cabled that MajorGeneral Sykes, chief of the Flying Corps, met with an accident whilst on his way to Paris from Hendon, the aeroplane side-slipping and crashing, killing the pilot. Some apprehension was caused among the local friends of Captain C. H. Brew, of New Plymouth, who, it was known, had been appointed pilot to the Chief of the Air Staff, and had been engaged in .'planing him to and from Paris, one one occasion narrowly escaping a serious accident through getting lost in a violent snowstorm and alighting in the torn and water-logged "no man's land" in Belgium. A cable just received from London, however, allays anxiety, Captain Drew not having been engaged 011 this particular occasion. Captain Draw ex-poets to return to New Zealand shortly.
A pleasax.t little function took place in the Plunket Society's rooms yesterday morning, when the members of'the committee met to entertain the late secretary, Mrs. S. Allen, ,to morning tea, prioi to her departure on a trip to England by the lonic. The mother's rest room had been tastefully arranged for the occasion. Mrs. Burgess presided, and. in making a presentation of a travelling purse-bag to the gues.t of the occasion, referred to the splendid work done for the society by Mrs. Allen, and regretted they were losing her services. Mrs. Allen suitably acknowledged the gift and expressions of good wishes. Mr. Burgess, who was also present, said that Mrs. Allen had taken up the work of the society at a critical time, and had done it well. He apologised for the absence of the members of the Advisory Committee.. Mr:. Allen received cordial wishes for a pleasant'voyage and a safe return.
Referring to the death of Mrs. A. Brown, the Stratford Post says: As a pioneer who faced the triais of an earlvday settlement, she was beloved by her neighbors far and near for her true Christian life, in which she was sustained by staunchness to the faith of her childhood, brought from the place of her birth in Inverness. She was a strong supporter of the Presbyterian Church. In the hard times of thirty years ago her name was a household one in the Jfgacre district, and none felt the need of a helping hand if distress came under her notice. Deceased married her late husband, Mr. Alexander Brown, after her arrival in New Zealand, and they were engaged in the sawmilling business, first at Pieton, afterwards north of Auckland, and then at Ngaere, where Mr. Brown succumbed. A large family of eight daughters and three sons were ream], and, with the exception of one (deceased)' all to-day mourn their loss. Deceased had attained the ripe old age of 70. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the remains being interred in the' Hawera cemetery, where the Bev. Gray officiated at the graveside.
