(.From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, May IS. On Wednesday evening the Foresters' Hall was well filled with card players, the occasion being a euchre tournament organised by the Foresters' Benefit Society. Competition amongst the ladies was very keen, Mesdames Green, Neea and Miss L. Groves tieing, the play-off favoring Mrs. Green. The winner of the gentleman's trophy was F. Primmer. As usual Mr. W. Hodgson proved an efficient M.C. whilst Miss 0. Rogers supplied the mu9ic. At the School Committee meeting last evening the resignation of Mr. 0. H. Buckeridge was accepted with regret. Mr. Sheat was elected a member of the committee and with Mr. Bridger (chairman), elected delegates to attend the Egmont School Committees' Association. Mr. Wilkinson, M.P., has received the following further telegram from Hon. Mr. Myers concerning the coal supply in Eltham: —"As previously advised I communicated with the Waikato mines with a view to increasing coal supplies for Eltham, and have now been advised by my representative in Auckland that the Taupiri Company has promised to use every endeavor to increase supplies for Eltham. At the same time, having consideration for the requirements of essential industries cannot promise any further assistance in the meantimg. I regret that at present it is impossible to supply you with more definite information."

At chess the Eltham. C.E.M.S. Club proved too strong for Mangatoki on Wednesday night, winning 10J games and. losing 2%. The scores made by E. A. P. Gibson (Eltham) 1, W.. ©. Webby I Mangatoki) 0; H. McKeown 1, Q. S. Papps 0. On Wednesday there was a, sitting of the S.M. Court, Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., presiding. A cadet named A. W. PeppereH' was fined £1 and costs 7s for failing to attend drills. A claim for £3 for wages was brought by Miss Dora Walsh, Kaponga (Mr T. B. Crump) against a sharetoilker named Lionel File (Mr. T. B. Crump). After hearing evidence judgment was entered up for plaintiff for £1 10s, with costs 9s. Another wages claim was that brought by Ivan Judd (Mr... J. L. Weir) against W. R. Morgan, sharemilker, Eltham (Mr. T. B. Crump). After talcing lengthy evidence the case was adjourned till next Court day.

Eltham, May 10.

At Lowgarth on Tuesday a welcome home dance was tendered to Sergt. D. Jones, M.M., and Trooper Bond. On behalf of the Lowgarth Patriotic Committee, Mr. D. Kenny presented each soldier with a set of military hair brushes, accompanied with the best of good wishes for the future. An appropriate, yet brief, reply was made by Sergt. Jones. Mr. McCarthy's orchestra (Kaponga) supplied excellent music, while Mrs, Price contributed several extras. The duties of M.C. was entrusted to Mr. Meharny.

A welcome home was tendered to several returned soldiers at the Mangatoki Hall on Thursday evening. Amongst those present was Private J. Turkington, who was heartily congratulated on winning the Military Medal by the chairman, Mr. W. A. Curteis. Others present were Privates G. Woodhead, D. Whitham, and Gunner Roy Ballantine. The evening proved a very pleasant one, dancing- and card-playig being the order. Soldiers previously residing at Rawhitiroa and now returning are being made the recipients of a medal, which has a soldier on sentry duty engraved on one side and inscribed "He Answered His Country's Call" and on the reverse side a space for recipient's name, Rawhitiroa, although having comparatively a small number of available men, lmd 22 representatives in the Expeditionary l&irces, and seven have "gone west." 'Salvationists here had a busy time yesterday, the occasion being the visit of Commissioner Hodder. The band was in full strength, aiid played several selections in the street prior to the address in the barracks. Besides the Commissioner and Mrs. Hodder, the visitors included Brigadier Toomer, Adjutant Bladin, and others. The officers delivered interesting addresses on the Salvation Army work.
