EGMQNT WINTER MEETING. SECOND DAY'S RESULT^ The weather was again fine, but overcast, for the Egmont winter meeting, the gathering being concluded successfully. The attendance was again very large, and the amount put through the totalisator a record. Racing was interesting throughout the day, particularly the steeplechase, which resulted in a well-earned and popular victory for the locallytrained Polthogue. This horse put up a brace, of attractive performances at the meeting, and looks like turning out a first-class steeplechaser. Munster again led the hurdlers home, putting up a fine •effort in carrying list lib home very comfortably in fast time—2min 45sec. Birkenvale was another to register a double win at the meeting, beating a weak field in the Mokoia Handicap. One of the best- finishes seen on the course was that of the Shorts, in which a sheet would have covered at least half a dozen horses. The Manaia Handicap wan another splendid race, a brace of outsiders —Tirana and Perfect Day—just getting home in front of Marqueteur and a bunched lot. The scarcity of good lightweight horsemen was a noticeable feature of the meeting, and many of the runners were forced to carry very heavy overweights.
The course was in good order, as the times registered show, and considering the long spell of dry weather, the club's caretaker (Mr. Alf. Morse) is to be congratulated on the appearance of the racing tracks and lawns. The Hawera Citizens' Band was again in attendance, and the catering and conduct of the booths left nothing to be desired. The secretary (Mr. V. Stratton) sent everything along smoothly and quickly, and the judge (Mr. Cameron)'and starter (Mr. C. O'Connor) got through their work well. Following are details of the racing: NGAMUTU APPRENTICED ••-<•**»» CAP, of 12tt sovs; secv **> '- 'iUIM- , and third 5 sovs torn aaa" i - •"**«* furlongs. I H.
