EMBARGO ON VEAL.
REMOVED BECAUSE OF FEED SHORTAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Customs stated that, acting on the advice of the Minister of Agriculture, he had given instructions to the various collectors of customs throughout the Dominion to grant permits for export of any quantities of veal to British or Allied destinations. At the same time he was forwarding a recommendation to the Governor-General that the order-in-council gazetted on April 10, 1916, be amended to allow exportation as usual, but until this approval was obtained it would be necessary for exporters to make application to the various collectors for permits. "This action," said' Mr. Myersj "has been taken as I am advised that feed for the purpose of carrying stock through the winter is insufficient, owing to the dry weather conditions experienced during the summer and autumn over large areas of the Dominion, more especially in the Hawke's Biy and Auckland districts. Young cattle will experience the greatest difficulty in meeting these conditions, so it is desirable 1 to reduce the young stock in order to save the balance from stai-vation. The retaoval of restrictions will therefore allow of this class being slaughtered and frozen for export, m the same time, I would like .to point out Wiit it may be necessary at some futur» date to reinipose the embargo."
